Incorporating Wellness into Home Design: Making Your House Feel Like a Home

"Real comfort, visual and physical, is vital to every room." - Mark Hampton

There is something special about being able to enjoy your home. Our homes should serve as a place of tranquility that promote not only physical comfort but also mental and emotional well-being. As we spend a significant portion of our lives indoors, the design of our living spaces plays a crucial role in shaping our overall sense of wellness! In this blog post, we'll look into the principles of incorporating wellness into interior design, creating spaces that nourish the mind, body, and soul.

The Beauty of Natural Lighting

Natural light has a profound impact on our mood and well-being! I love keeping my windows open to allow for that beautiful bright light to enter into my apartment. When designing your home, make efforts to maximize natural light by strategically using light curtains or blinds that allow sunlight to filter through. Additionally, consider the views from your windows. Connecting with nature, even if it's just a glimpse of trees or the sky, can evoke a sense of calm and tranquility!

Adding Greenery and Plants

Research has shown there are many benefits to being in the presence of nature, whether that’s through having small garden or having a few indoor household plants. I love having plants and enjoy caring for them as they also care for me too in a sense. “Plants and exposure to greenery have been found to have multiple mental health benefits, such as lowering stress, decreasing feelings of depression, increasing sociability, restoring focus, improving cognitive performance, improving mood, and increasing self-esteem,” Jones tells The Healthy @Reader’s Digest. Some of the most popular indoor plants are below! If you have not considered getting any plants, I strongly recommend it. I also have a mixture of real and fake plants, all of which I feel have a profound impact on my sense of serenity and peace.

Reorganizing and De-Cluttering Your Space

One thing I try to do is to keep my place nice, tidy, and decluttered. A cluttered environment can contribute to feelings of chaos, stress and overwhelm. Embracing some minimalism and decluttering your space can create a sense of calm and serenity. Try reorganizing things and maybe even donating items you do not use frequently. It may also be good to by smart storage tubs/containers to keep belongings organized and out of sight, allowing for a more peaceful and harmonious living environment.

Using Natural Materials Into Design

Consider using natural materials such as wood, stone, and bamboo in your décor to evoke a sense of warmth and earthiness. When we design our spaces to incorporate some of these details, it also helps to create a sense of comfort. Whether it is getting a mini-fountain, having earthy scented candles or buying accents that have a natural essence, you can find unique ways to add natural materials into your design.

Rethinking Color

Have you ever heard of the color psychology? I learned with Masterclass that color psychology is the study of how certain colors impact human behavior. Different colors have different meanings, connotations, and psychological effects that vary across different individuals, regions, and cultures. It is also impacted by an individual's preference. The way we decorate with color can invoke certian emotions/feelings. For example, bright, warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) stimulate energy and happiness while cool colors (blues, greens, purples) are largely seen as soothing and calming. In my apartment, I decided to add more yellow to my space to evoke more warmth and happiness/cheerfulness. I then mixed it in with sage green, white, and light pink in certain rooms. In my bedroom, I added the sage green to bring relaxation to the space.

In conclusion, designing for wellness is about more than just aesthetics – it's about creating a space that nurtures your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. By incorporating natural elements, promoting comfort and relaxation, fostering social connections, and encouraging mindfulness, you can transform your house into a true sanctuary – a place where you feel not only at home, but truly alive.

Prayer For Your Home

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for this beautiful day. I ask that you protect my home. Help it to be a place of comfort, peace, warmth, and tranquility. Be in the midst and allow for your presence to felt. Guard my home and keep anything out that is will harm me. Allow my guests and any other individual who enters this space to notice your love and comfort. Protect all who live here and all who will live in this space. In Jesus Christ, I pray, amen.
